At long last, BBC Video will be able to fill the gaping hole in many North American collections of Doctor Who DVDs. Or perhaps you’ve been hoping to streamline down from a raggedy old VHS taped off-air fourteen years ago. The 1996 Doctor Who movie marks an important step in the show’s history between the classic years that ended in 1989 and the new series that began in 2005, and the forthcoming DVD has 3 hours of extras to document the production from every angle. Though Paul McGann (Luther, Collision, Our Mutual Friend) was to star as the Eighth Doctor only once on television, he made an indelible impression on fans, and he went on to record a series of Big Finish Audio Adventures and animated webisodes for BBC.com that kept the idea of Doctor Who alive during some very lean years.

Can’t wait to pre-order!!!!
At last for us in the US. Please, let’s have more of the 8th Doctor.
loved the sets and can’t wait for it on blue ray
All I can say is that it’s about bloody time!!!! Thank you very much BBC.
Well about time, ya’ll! I watch my videotape I made off a TV station in Georgia about once a year and its falling apart. The regeneration scene where he walks through the morgue in his shroud is just the best. The motorcycle scenes and the 1999 party are great too. I’ve had to be content with following McGann in the Big Finish Audios and they’re great too. But thanks for the DVD at last.
I have seen the movie on a Region 2 DVD from the U.K., playing it through a computer to the TV. I loved it and can’t wait to see it again, and to add it to my growing collection.
Yay – can’t wait to finally have this!
I saw this when it first broadcast on the television and thought it very good. Doctor “purists” might find a few faults with it but I thought it very well played. I look forward to adding this to my collection.
The way to go (at least, the way I went) was to subscribe to one of the premium channels for a month on DirectTV when the movie was being shown here (maybe 5 years ago?) and record it to DVD. Digital all the way.
I’d still purchase a “cleaner” version when it comes out in Region 1, though.
I can’t wait until I find out when is the release date!
….and when will this be in my mailbox? : )
This has been on DVD for many years now. You could always buy the import and play it on your computer (mine’s hooked up to a 42-inch flatscreen) or get a region-free DVD player. Why wait years for stuff to come out in the US? People have been buying imported records and DVDs since the 1970s, so why not DVDs? It’s not much hassle to play them. Use your American DVD player for American DVDs only, another one for imports. Easy peasy!
I remember when my small Doctor Who club called Timelords of Gallifrey found out that this movie would be shown and we had been going to a coffe shop to hold our meetings and we asked if we could use their large screen tv for our club and they didn’t have a vcr and I took mine there to record the movie. The blender was used twice and it messed up the picture. I’m glad that all these years it’s finally being released by the BBC. I can’t wait to get the DVD.
Finally!! Why wasn’t this done years ago? When will it come out?
Thank You for releasing the movie with the 8th Doctor.
I think the Movie was ok. The story wasn’t the right one to put him in. Paul McGann is the only Doctor to do one episode and get Canned in Doctor Who History. I think he was the right person to play the 8th Doctor. He has been playing The Doctor since 2000 on CD. Some buddy new that he worked as The Doctor.
When is this DVD going to be out ?
At long last!!! When is the release date for the DVD?
