This week TV Guide reported that Merlin will return with its third season on Syfy early next year. This is great news for DVD fans because we’ll be able get Season Two out in January or February at the latest. The enthusiasm of Merlin fans at ComicCon was electric, not least because teen lead Colin Morgan is a comic book geek himself. Certainly the viewing figures for Season Two on Syfy grew and grew to an impressive average of 1.7 million. The handsome teen leads, Colin Morgan as young Merlin and Bradley James as young Arthur are ably supported by several generations of British acting greats, including Anthony Head (Persuasion, Little Britain) as King Uther, Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave) in a very funny turn as Merlin’s long-suffering mentor, and John Hurt (The Naked Civil Servant) as the voice of the dragon. Season Two adds to that roster with Sarah Parish (Mistresses) and Adrian Lester (Hustle) as well as MacKenzie Crook. Crook, of course, shot to fame as the weasely Gareth in The Office, but he has since built up his box office cred in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. As with Season One, the next DVD is packed with extras: audio commentaries, behind the scenes, introductions, wallpapers and more.

Excellent news! So glad Merlin is coming back with all the fantastic stories, sets, and of coures brilliant actors. Hooray!
Thanks for letting us know when season 2 would be available on DVD. I’m looking forward to getting the season 2 DVD and also watching season 3 on SyFy. Season 1 was great.
Love Merlin (and company) and am so glad that they will all be returning! One of the few quality programs available to U.S. viewers.
Fabulous! I’ve been waiting for Season 2 DVD to come out and now I know when! Can’t wait!
Looking forward to season 2 DVDs. Actually, I can’t believe it takes them this long to get the DVDs out. Who’s in charge of marketing the product in the US? They should have had it ready to sell shortly after season 2 ended.
I have a simple rule: if I watched it in HD, I will only own it in HD. Please release all season of Merlin on Blu-ray! Otherwise, I won’t be purchasing it. And that makes me sad. And mad.
Really enjoyed the first season, and am very glad that a second season will be coming out on DVD…..AND….a third season. Love the characters, young and old.
dd, don’t be fooled into thinking that everything you see on an HD channel was filmed in HD. The first two seasons of Merlin were NOT filmed in HD, so what was shown on HD channels was an upconverted PAL version. So support S1 & S2 by purchasing the DVDs, since Blu-ray releases for these seasons makes no sense.
BBC Video has been very good so far about only releasing Blu-rays for programs that were actually filmed in HD (I think the only exception to this is the Doctor Who 2008 Christmas special The Next Doctor, which was included in the Complete Specials Blu-ray set in an upconverted format to complement the other specials, which were all filmed in HD).
You will be pleased to know that S3 of Merlin, which began on Sept. 11 in the UK, was filmed in HD, so there should be a Blu-ray release in the future (and without spoiling anything, I’ll simply say the S3 premiere was fantastic).
HOORAY! I am so thrilled Merlin is returning! This is exactly what I was looking for at BBC.com, and you provided it!!
Good to hear there will be a season 3.I’ve enjoyed watching a show that exhibits youth and age coming together, even w/differences,yet show respect for one another. The acting and directing has been superb.I wonder if S3 will have an episode where Merlin gets to speak w/his mother about meeting his father.
sooo Glad to hear merlin is coming back to Scyfy!!!!!
Now I can ogle Arthur on my TV instead of the internet. lol
But seriously Merlin is a Great show with an amazing cast. Cant wait to watch.
I really enjoy seson one, of merline. i think its a great show and I wish all the actors on the show good luck. especially sir bradely who does lot hard stunts on the show. it must be very exhausting, keep up the good work. wish you good luck cant wait to see seaon 3.
Dear BBC, please release Merlin in BluRay. The show is so beautiful, it deserves the Hi-def treatment!
I love the show, I love the actors, not much on TV worth watching, but Merlin is number one with me, please keep on producing this fine show.
UKTVFan – The BBC has stated that Merlin was filmed in Super 16 which is an analog film format. While they believe Super 16 to be suitable only for SD conversions it has been successfully utilized elsewhere to produce HD programming. Though much depends on the particular film, lenses, etc., the detail available in the Super 16 film itself probably (read “almost certainly”) meets or exceeds what is necessary to produce great looking 1080p works.
The problem isn’t that they can’t produce an HD version of Merlin, the problem is that they do not wish to do so. I’d imagine that HD digital intermediates probably already exist as it wouldn’t make much sense to scan the analog Super 16 film at a very low resolution as the first step in post production.
This show is the first show that I have ever been addicted to. I love the fact that it has no swearing, no gore, and good always wins over evil. Love the British humor; always have, and you have the most handsome actors around. I like Morgana as the sweet one rather than the evil one. I can’t stand Uther’s character, and hope that Arthur will become king soon. I just love Gwen (Gius, Lancelot, he is gorgeous,Gwaine, etc., too) as she is so sweet, and has a loving heart. Your effects are so very awesome, and you could not have gotten a better voice for the dragon Kilgera than John Hurt. I am a disabled woman who lives by herself in my house of 30 years. I am in such severe pain every day, my house is falling apart around me. It needs the wrecking ball, and to be rebuilt to suit my disabilities, yet can not find anyone, kind enough, or that has the money to help me with all my problems, except your show Merlin, which takes me away from thinking about my situation(the pain eases up some as well). I just hope that you all do not change the main characters, including Arthur’s new knights, nor the path it has been going on I haven’t been able to get the 3rd season, as I found a company to buy it from, yet they sent me region 2 instead of region 1, so I had to send it back.
I was told by someone, that in the first episode of season 4, that Merlin is killed. Please do not let that kind of thing come about. There have been many shows that have lost their fan base over such things. I do see a lot of mistakes on the episodes, as I am observer, yet your show is the best in the world, and I sure hope that you will keep Merlin, the show, on for many many more years to come. Thank you so much for the gift of Merlin, it truly is the BEST!!!
